Shame is for losers.

[info]prozacpark asked for our big dark fandom secrets that we would not stoop to submitting to [info]fandomsecrets because they are just sort of pathetic/wrong and make us feel vaguely ashamed.

However, as longtime readers know, I am largely incapable of fandom-related shame. On this journal I have happily proclaimed my absolutely sincere love for, among others, Meat Loaf, Roxette and Gossip Girl. I know liking these things makes me desperately uncool. I am cool with that!

But I don't think I've mentioned how much I love Captain Planet and the Planeteers (and its sequel, which I can't remember the name of - but I treated them as the same show in my head).

This is a huge lapse, because this clumsy, earnest, totally glorious show is vital to an understanding of me.

There are five teenagers (three boys and two girls) of multiple ethnicities/cultural/class backgrounds. They are summoned by the magical/mythical spirit of the Earth to be its protectors against corporate greed and irresponsibility. They are individually gifted and powerful, but only when they work together - when their powers combine - are they able to overcome the most terrible threats to their fragile, beautiful world.

I watched the show for maybe five or six years. It didn't exactly make me who I am today, but it certainly had a not inconsiderable part to play in that process.

Also, Kwame was totally cute.

I am totally not ashamed of my love for the horrible, horrible, 1950s TV version of Robin Hood. Socialism plus men in tights... ALL GOOD!

I loved that show. And I totally thought Captain Planet was hot.

If liking Meat Loaf is uncool, I don't want to be cool.

I was actually listening to Paradise by the Dashboard Light while reading this, so there you have it.

I've been looking for their rings. I would at least like one for me, but I have a handful of friends that I would gift with them. :)

Bwah. Roxette IS cool! Don't you let anyone tell you different!

And I'm also on the "What what?! There was a sequel?!" boat.

What on earth is wrong with Roxette and Meat Loaf? Can I have them both in one concert please?

Roxette is awesome, and I loved the NKOTB cartoon and wrote fanfic about it. And sometimes bought more than one copy of the novels because OMG one day they would be worth LOTS OF MONEY so I had to keep one copy in pristine state. Cuz I am HARDCORE.

Also, I loved Captain Planet. Wheeler was the red-head boy, right?

One of my high school biology teachers once put an extra credit section on a quiz: write down the Captain Planet themesong.

Best. Test. Ever.

[skips ahead a bit]

We're the Planeteers
You can be one too!
'Cause saving our planet is the thing to do!

Looting and polluting is not the way
Hear what Captain Planet has to say!

Can you remeber the dinky di's the australian animals which had that diary thing? I bet they had saucy going ons between the species.
in my fandom, I had the biggest crush on the littlest vampire; in retrospect that makes so much sense.

I liked Ma-ti until I found out he was a boy. :/

I think that says a lot about young me.

I also still think Captain Planet was a pretty freaking awesome show.
